The Cost of Hiring a Doula

MotherWit-Pic3The cost of having a doula depends largely on her experience, what state you are located in and what services are included. Typically Doulas charge around $800-$1200 for full Doula services. Many Doulas-in-Training look to attend births for free or low cost in order to get their hours for their certification. This is also an option for families seeking Doula support who may not be able to afford it.
On average, Doulas try to book 2-3 births a month so that client births do not overlap.  In the event that two clients DO go into labor at the same time, most Doulas have at least one backup, if not two, to cover one of the births so that the family still receives the support they need.

Is it worth the price? You can answer this question by knowing what a Doula can offer to you and your family. Here are some of the things a Doula can offer:
Childbirth Education
Many Doulas have experience in specific childbirth methods such as The Bradley Method or Hypnobabies

Perental Visits
Your Doula will visit your home to establish a relationship with you and your family as well as to help coach you through some laboring techniques, such as breathing and various positions to relieve pain and help progress labor.

Labor/Delivery Support
Your Doula will provide support during your labor in a variety ways. These include, coaching you on your breathing, suggesting and implementing various positions for labor and pushing. Your Doula may also implement relaxation techniques such as hynosis, massage and aromatherapy.

– Postpartum Doula Support for up to 5 hours after birth
– Breastfeeding Support (in hospital and at home)
In home follow up visits 1 week and 6 weeks after birth
