What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

Time can fly as memories are made. But they can zoom by even quicker when you are pregnant. It seems as though one day you see the ‘positive’ sign on a pregnancy test, and the next you are folding up onesies and painting the walls of that extra bedroom a nice soothing color. One thing that you’ve probably thought about by now is what to bring to the hospital when you are ready to deliver. Clothes, check. Jammies? Check. A good book to read? Check. There are plenty of things that you’ll both want to and need to bring. Below is a list that you can follow to put together the best delivery day bag for you.

Start Early!
At the start of your second trimester, begin putting the items you want to bring to the hospital in your bag. By beginning early and going slow, you can put the items in your bag as you think of them, instead of haphazardly writing a list and possibly forgetting to put something on it. This way you are les likely to forget items at home when your big day arrives!
There will of course be some items, like clothes and electronics that can’t go in the bag until the last minute. However, other items such as your birth plan, any important paperwork that you need to bring to the hospital with you and the baby’s coming home outfit are all things that can go into the delivery day bag when you start putting it together!
Remember: Relax!
One thing to keep in mind when packing your bag is to put things in there that will keep both you and your partner distracted and relaxed. If you have a favorite type of music, load that into your MP3 player and bring that with you. Maybe you enjoy meditation or guided imagery? You can pack along some CD’s to help you relax when you are in the hospital.
There are many different methods of relaxation out there that you can easily explore, so that you can find the best one for you. Some other easy ways to relax are bringing your computer/tablet or any other favorite electronic with you, an engrossing book to read or even a crossword puzzle or word game. The key point is to keep your mind distracted from the pain.

Odds and Ends
There will no doubt be little items here and there that you will want to bring with you. You may want to pack a little “snack bag” for your partner, if you aren’t sure what your delivery center offers. That way, your partner won’t have to leave your side, and you’ll also have something to munch on after you deliver your little bundle!
When it is getting down to the last couple days or so before your delivery date, you’ll want to make sure that you have your essential toiletries at the ready, such as toothbrushes, hairbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, etc. You can keep them all close together in your bathroom until you are ready to head to the hospital, and then when the time comes, you can grab them and head out!
Pregnancy in and of itself can be a little bit stressful, so by following these tips for packing your delivery bag early, you’ll have one less thing to worry about!
