The Benefits of Having a Doula

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne of the most magical times in a woman’s life is being pregnant, and the most empowering experience of all for a woman is giving birth to her child. While there are many decisions that need to be made during pregnancy, one of the largest is forming your birth team, or who will be present during your labor and delivery. It can certainly seem like a scary prospect, to be thinking about your delivery day, but while it is a little frightful, it will also be a day filled with joy, excitement, tears and happiness.

Have you thought about having a doula present at your delivery? Doulas are trained professionals that are by your side to offer physical, informational and emotional support to you during this intensely emotional and memorable time in your life. Doulas are not only present during the delivery, but can also be there for you throughout your pregnancy, specially trained and highly knowledgeable, they will be happy answering any questions and addressing any concerns that you may have along the way.
The word Doula means “woman’s servant”. It has been shown that throughout history, women have been helping other women throughout pregnancy and the delivery process, lending a positive aspect to the process of labor. Doulas are not meant to take the place of your partner, but to complement them. While Doulas are not medical professionals, they are well versed in the stages of pregnancy, labor, delivery and any complications that may arise during your delivery.
During the time period before your delivery, you will have time to get acquainted with your Doula, know each other, and they can familiarize themselves with your wants and needs, as well as your pregnancy history. When your big day arrives, your Doula will remain close to you at all times, there to lend a listening ear, a helping hand and a wealth of information. They are also there to fulfill any needs or wants that you may have.
Doulas also make use of the power of human touch to not only help relax you, but to also stimulate the body’s production of natural Oxytocin, which helps the uterus to contract, thereby cutting the length of your labor, and avoiding the administration of synthetic Oxytocin.
Another way that Doulas can offer their support to you is after your child is born, is that they  will come to your home to help you settle in with your newest little addition to the family, taking the stress off of you. It has been studied and shown that in cases where a Doula was present during the birth process, there were by far more positive outcomes, such as lower rates of caesarean sections.
Perhaps the greatest thing that can come of you having a Doula present during your pregnancy and labor is the peace of mind that comes with it. Knowing that someone will be there for you, unconditionally, someone you can trust, someone to talk to, and most of all you’ll have a friend.
